What Is naltrexone?

Naltrexone is an FDA-approved medication used to treat:

Alcohol use disorder (AUD)
Opioid use disorder (OUD)

It works by blocking opioid receptors in the brain, which prevents the euphoric and sedative effects of alcohol and opioids. By removing the “reward” associated with substance use, naltrexone helps reduce cravings and supports behavioral change.

Unlike some other MAT options (like methadone or buprenorphine), naltrexone is not an opioid, is non-addictive, and has no potential for misuse.

Oral vs. injectable naltrexone

At Lanier Recovery Center, we offer two forms of naltrexone depending on your treatment plan and preferences:

Oral Naltrexone (Daily Pill) – Taken once a day and requires consistent adherence. Best for individuals with strong daily support or high internal motivation.
Vivitrol (Monthly Injection) – A long-acting injectable form of naltrexone, administered once every 28–30 days. Offers more stability and convenience with no daily dosing.
